7 Safety Tips for Knife Usage in the Workplace

If you utilize knives in the workplace, you may realize the safety risks involved with them. Don’t put yourself in danger. Here are some tips that can help you be as safe as possible while using knives in the workplace.

1. Get training on how to cut with the specific knife you are using and the specific material you are cutting. Whether it is a regular utility knife, a retractable safety knife, or scissors, every knife works differently. It is also important to know how to cut the specific material you are cutting. The proper way to cut paper or plastic is going to be different than carpet or textiles.

2. Do not get distracted. It is important that you stay 100% focused while using a knife.

3. Keep knives sharp and maintained. When using a dull knife, you must exert more force into each cut, which could cause you to lose control of the knife.

4. Always cut away from your body in case you lose control of the knife.

5. Cut your materials on a stable surface, such as a table or cutting board. This will help you keep the material you are cutting stable.

6. Store your knives in a safe place when they are not being used. If you leave them out on a table, you or another worker may accidentally come into contact with it. Always engage the lock on the knife if there is one.

7. If a knife is dropped, let it drop. Never try to catch a knife that is falling. It is better that it hits the floor or your shoes than for you to catch the blade with your hands.
